I am a teenager myself and I never thought of it that way. I am attracted by the pinks and the cute bras and PJs. Now I see it all differently. Thank you for showing me another view.

Actually, what Victoria Secret is doing is called "Brand Loyality." If you market to young females when they are pre-teens they will stay with the brand when they are ready for the C.F.M. panties & bras when they are older. Obviously, you don't want to market thongs to a 12-year old, so you go with the pink, slumber party theme.

Macintosh did the same thing in the 1980's by donating thousands of personal computers middle & high schools across the country. That campagin did not seem to work as well. Victoria Secret may very well succeed were others have not.

I think lumping the japanese style of Lolita into this is degrading. The Japanese women have for years valued youth a lot more than we as a Western society has. Lolita is by no means a main-stream style but it is found most often on women ages 16-30....It is supposed to be cute and Victorian style. 'Sexy' for Lolita type styles is coined by Western society... and is NOT what lolita is about. Lolita is about being modest and kawaii(cute in japanese). It reflects the opposite of sexy, hooker-like Barbies, Bratz, and MyScene dolls. It serves no place in your article. Thank you./

@Camille:

First of all, Lolita he's referring to is a novel.
And the author mentioned the western culture is shifting to a more innocent desire away from barbie whore.
I didn't see him "lumping" anything, just making good points and different views.

Also if you don't think the japonese think its sexy then try googling some japonese porn, thats all you'll find.

I agree with Camilla.
The Japanese "Lolita" style captures the innocence of youth. That's why the style consists of females who dress very modestly. Most of the time covering all of their legs and arms.

The Japanese "Lolita" style has NOTHING to do with the book Lolita. The only thing they have in common is the name.

As for the older women who do dress in Japanese "Lolita" style, I don't see them as not dressing their age. The style is inspired by fashion in the Victorian period and personally I find it charming.

When the Japanese "Lolita" style first made its mark in the world it was meant to be just that, capturing the innocence of youth and nostalgia of the Victorian era (and still is). Of course, like all things in the world, it can be twisted into something perverse.

Um, "dress their age"? That's a bit of a ridiculous and open ended statement. You're forcing your views on others? Because you think that older women should look a certain way, you believe that they should? ROFL.

I agree completely with Camille and J. Lolita fashion has nothing to do with sexy. Any real Lolita will tell you that. It's exactly the opposite. For many followers of the Loli style, it's about fighting back against the "sex sells" culture. Lolita is about modesty and charm. In fact, most Lolita-made guides to Lolita fashion have a common rule; if it's sexy, it's not Lolita. Frankly, I'm a tad insulted that you didn't bother to do any research at all, before casually throwing Lolita fashion into this article, as if it were responsible for, or perhaps just a product of, this "younger is better" sexual ideal.

And lucas77, Rayne does NOT make a good point. If either of you had bothered to read the article more carefully, you would know that he was talking about a Japanese, fashion-based subculture. Nabokov's Lolita was barely mentioned in passing.
